Shark Vs Octopus

The voiceover is the most annoying I've ever heard in a nature programme, but it's a pretty cool clip all the same...

The biggest fresian in Britain
By LUKE SALKELD
12th May 2008

His name is Chilli and he's described as a gentle giant. Which is just as well for his handler, Tara Nirula, pictured by his side. His owners have contacted the Guinness Book of Records who are currently assessing his credentials and comparing them to other big bovines. The black and white Friesian bullock weighs well over a ton and at the same height as a small elephant, casts a shadow over his cattle companions who are about 5ft.

Despite his grand stature, Chilli only grazes on grass during the day and enjoys the occasional swede as a treat. The heifer, who is almost as high as he is long, lives at the Ferne Animal Sanctuary in Chard, Somerset, after he was left on their doorstep aged just six-days-old. Nine years on, Chilli has kept on growing, and staff believe the giant will smash a record for Britain's tallest ever cow.

Naomi Clarke, manager at the sanctuary, said: "As Chilli was growing up we began noticing that he was bigger than our other cows. He now stands at 6ft 6ins from the floor to the top of his shoulder and he is massive when he holds his head up. We have made an application to Guinness Book Of Records and we are quite confident he will get it."

Chilli, who is 6ft 7ins long, was left running around on the doorstep of the sanctuary along with his twin sister Jubilee in 1999. Over the years, staff noticed Chilli begin to tower over his sister and companions. But it was only when he failed to fit in a standard cattle cage to have his hooves clipped that they realised just how big he had grown compared to normal bullocks.

Miss Clarke said: "For some reason a farmer decided he didn't want Chilli and Jubilee so dumped them with three others on our doorstep nine years ago. He was only six days old and didn't look that big but as the years passed we noticed he was getting rather tall. People would always comment on how much bigger he was from the other cows and bulls when they visited the sanctuary. He does weigh over a ton but is quite lean and not as fat as some of his companions."

She continued: "We don't know what has made him so tall. He doesn't eat that much and his feet and head are in proportion - he is just very large. He is a very friendly and gentle cow so we hopes he manages to break the record - he deserves it."

At present, the tallest bovine in the world is 6ft 8ins Fiorino, who lives in Italy. A spokeswoman for the Guinness Book Of Records said: "I can confirm that an application has been received for Chilli which is currently under research." Six months ago another bullock vying for a record breaking spot was The Field Marshal who weighed in at 3,000lb. At the time he was on course to over take the current British record-holder, his former stablemate The Colonel, who stood 6ft 5in tall and weighed 3,500lb. He died in 2005.

The amazing moment a horse did a somersault
14th May 2008

She has fallen head over heels. Literally. After the saddle slipped from underneath jockey Anna-Katharina Bromann, her mount Schattenlady crashed into the safety rails, unseating the jockey. She then went on to perform a dramatic somersault, to the amazement of race-goers. And amazingly, both horse and jockey emerged from the acrobatics unscathed.

The prize-winning poodles with a penchant for fancy dress
By James White
4th June 2008

It may look like this poodle is having something of an identity crisis, but this is in fact the handywork of one of America's most dedicated dog groomers. Since 2000, pet hairdresser Sandra Hartness has coloured, cropped and accessorised her dogs, with startling results. Other creations by Sandra, from Yucca Valley, California, include a dragon, peacock, camel and even the star-spangled banner.

Cindy, Sandra's patient pooch, has won numerous prizes for appearing at dog shows in the various guises and was once made up to look like a UFO. The pair have featured in numerous editions of US dog care industry bible Groomer to Groomer and are a popular if eccentric sight in their hometown.

This will come as no surprise, but there's even a reality show on the cable network "Animal Planet" called "Groomer Has It" where the competitors for "Groomer of the Year" do similarly embarrassing things to some poor dogs.....

The one-horned deer that could solve the mystery of the unicorn
12th June 2008

A deer with a single horn in the center of its head - much like the fabled, mythical unicorn - has been spotted in a nature preserve in Italy, park officials said today. 'This is fantasy becoming reality,' Gilberto Tozzi, director of the Center of Natural Sciences in Prato said.

The one-year-old Roe Deer - nicknamed, unsurprisingly, 'Unicorn' - was born in captivity in the research centre's park in the Tuscan town of Prato, near Florence. He is believed to have been born with a genetic flaw; his twin has two horns.

The unicorn, a horse-like creature with magical healing powers, has appeared in legends and stories throughout history, from ancient and medieval texts to the adventures of Harry Potter. 'This shows that even in past times, there could have been animals with this anomaly,' he said by telephone. 'It's not like they dreamed it up.'

Single-horned deer are rare but not unheard of - but even more unusual is the central positioning of the horn, experts said. 'Generally, the horn is on one side of the head rather than being at the center. This looks like a complex case,' said Fulvio Fraticelli, scientific director of Rome's zoo. He said the position of the horn could also be the result of a trauma early in the animal's life.

Other mammals are believed to contribute to the myth of the unicorn, including the narwhal, a whale with a long, spiraling tusk.

Monster crab with claws the size of a man's hand captured off the British coast
3rd July 2008

It lurked in the wreck of an old battleship 160ft below the surface – a true monster of the deep. Diver Paul Worsley could hardly believe the size of the giant crab he found in Lyme Bay, off the Dorset coast. Careful to avoid its fearsome claws, he managed to get it into a bag and raise it to the surface. Enlarge Claws for concern: Paul Worsley gets to grips with the giant crab he caught in Lyme Regis harbour

For his efforts, he can congratulate himself on capturing what experts believe is the biggest edible crab ever landed. It weighed 17lb and had a shell width of 12in while each of its massive claws was as big as a man's hand. The previous largest edible crab on record is in the collection of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Its carapace was 11in wide.

Mr Worsley, from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, said: 'I couldn't believe it when I saw it.' Andy Horton founder of the British Marine Life Study Society, said: 'If anyone has found a bigger one could they let us know?' Unfortunately, Mr Worsley's crab will not be displayed in any museum. A friend has eaten it.

Unlucky donkey rescued from well

A donkey had to be rescued by fire crews after he fell down a well in a field in Northamptonshire. An RSPCA inspector, a vet and firefighters were called to Orton, near Kettering, after a passer-by spotted the donkey, called Eeyore. He was up to his neck in water after tumbling into the well.

Police closed a nearby road, while firefighters took two hours to haul a sedated Eeyore out. He was wrapped in a blanket and reunited with his owners. Insp Cherry Evans of the RSPCA said "We were so grateful to the fire service for their help in moving Eeyore to safety, as we just don't have the equipment needed. It is amazing that the donkey escaped with only a few scratches, and it is thanks to the person who spotted him and the firefighters from Kettering, Mereway, The Mounts and Wellingborough that he is alive and well."

Escaped bull gatecrashes neighbour's pool party
By Catriona Stewart
13th July 2008

To celebrate the completion of his new swimming pool, businessman Jamie Stewart invited a few friends and family over for a dip. But the last thing the bemused host expected was to be disturbed by a gatecrasher - in the shape of a half-ton bull.

The massive animal had escaped from a nearby field and was being chased by farm-hands when he crashed into Mr Stewart's garden - and dived headlong into the water. And since such a large beast could hardly use the step-ladder to climb out, he was forced to tread water for the next three hours until firemen could drain away the water and hoist him back onto dry land.

Last night Mr Stewart described his astonishment at the unexpected visitor who had taken the first swim in his new pool. The 41-year-old said: "I absolutely couldn't believe my eyes. There was a bull swimming in our new pool. I think he had perfected his front crawl by the time he was rescued."

The dramatic pool-party took place on Friday. Work had just been completed on the luxury outdoor heated swimming pool Mr Stewart had ordered for his home. Workmen had spent the day pumping in ten thousand gallons of water and Mr Stewart's guests started to arrive in the late afternoon for the inaugural swim.

However celebrations took a surprise turn when a two-year-old bull from a neighbouring farm jumped a fence and escaped from his pasture. The young animal, whose full show-name is Broombrae Tramp, was apparently intent on making closer acquaintance with a herd of cows in another field. But when his owner, farmer Alexander Jack, gave chase, the bull changed course and instead crashed into Mr Stewart's garden.

The pool was covered at the time so the animal was unable to see the potential hazard, but immediately burst through the canvas and began to splash about in the four-foot deep water. While neighbours, friends and family crowded round to watch the drama unfold, six firemen from the Fife brigade joined a local vet to help rescue the hapless party animal.

Mr Stewart, a company director, added: "My family and I stood back and let the emergency services do all the work. I don't think they were terribly pleased with us - we stood in the garden with glasses of wine and shouted unhelpful suggestions."

Mr Stewart's children Samantha, 12, Lucy, 10, and Finbar, 7, were delighted with their unusual party guest. He added: "The kids thought it was great. They were a bit disappointed that they didn't get to have the swim they were planning but they ended up with a much better story to tell their friends." Mr Stewart's partner Gillian runs Acorn nursery from the Kinaldy farmhouse, near St Andrews, but evacuated the children as a precaution.

A three hour rescue attempt saw a vet fire two tranquilliser bullets into the bull - nicknamed Pedro by firemen - before the pool was drained and the rescue crew used a digger to lift him out. Broombrae Tramp is now recovering from his ordeal in a secure field. The outdoor heated pool, designed by Alba Pools, will need minor repairs and to be refilled.

Quest to find the world's biggest freshwater fish lands a 6-foot stingray... a mere tiddler!
20th July 2008

At six feet wide, this stingray seems to measure up as a monster of the deep. But if you think it's the king of the stingers, think again. Legend has it that in the rivers of Cambodia there are others with wingspans of 14 feet.

The pictured stingray was caught in the Maeklong River by U.S. biologist Zeb Hogan, 34, who is on a worldwide quest for the largest freshwater fish. Mr Hogan is being guided by Rick Humphreys, a Briton who runs a fishing company in Cambodia. Mr Humphreys has long dreamt of finding an enormous ray and said of this one: 'It's a start. There are a lot bigger ones than that.'

Mr Hogan' research is part of the Megafishes project financed by the National Geographic Society. The three-year project, which started in 2006, aims to document and protect freshwater giants that weigh at least 200 pounds (91 kilograms) or measure 6 feet (1.83 meters) long.

In the past year, Mr Humphreys and his partner, Wuttichai Khuensuwan, have caught 40 rays on the Ban Pakong and Maeklong Rivers, the largest weighing in at 485 pounds (220 kilograms). He says he prefers stingrays because of their fighting prowess - they routinely break fishing lines and one took 15 of his men about six hours to bring to the surface. "Their strength is legendary... When you see them in the flesh, it is quite humbling."

Caw blimey! The confused crow that thinks it's a dog
30th July 2008

With his sleek black feathers, sharp beak and wings there would seem to be little disputing the facts: this is a crow. It’s just a shame no one has got round to explaining that to Jack – the bird that thinks he’s a dog.

When the Notaro-Livingstone family first discovered their confused pet, he was too small to fend for himself and so they took him in and cared for him. But after just ten weeks of living with the family, the crow has some serious identity issues. Joe, 11 said: ‘"I found Jack when I went fishing - he was so tiny and he couldn't even lift his own head. I brought him home and we looked after him. And now he thinks he's a dog and he tries to protect us - he even jumps on the postman's head."

Jack will often disappear for the day but returns home to hop around the worktops and drink from the kitchen sink. Joe's sister, 12-year-old Cheryl, said: "Whenever we get in the car, he jumps in too because he wants to come with us. And when mum comes back, he jumps on her lap like an excitable puppy. He is stubborn but really thinks he is part of the family."

So these two people raised this lion cub who they named Christian, and sadly he got too big for them to take care of so they decided to release him to live as a wild lion. Well, in this footage, a year has passed and it looks like Christian's adapted to living with a pride of lions when his old friends come back to visit him. Watch closely and you can see the look of pure disbelief that dawns on his muzzle- it's awesome. ^_^ Next thing you know, we have a heart warming reunion. Not long after, members of Christian's pride approach and even they seem to accept Christian's human friends.

Again, THIS IS NOT MINE! This footage from Christian's documentary was also kleptoed from www.kimbawlion.com- a FANTASTIC website about Kimba the White Lion. ^_^ So send all Kudos where it belongs!
