One is a TV institution that has been a fixture in the nation’s living rooms for almost 50 years. The other is a surgically enhanced model who made a career from scantily-clad poses and outrageous antics. But despite being one of Britain’s most controversial celebrities, Katie Price – aka Jordan – is deemed so socially important a new Coronation Street plotline features one of the characters wanting to emulate her.
Rosie Webster, played by actress Helen Flanagan, stuns her family when she decides she wants to be the ‘new Jordan.’ The character, who is 18 in the show, has a test photo shoot, dressed in provocative outfits. osie is seen for the first time in the ‘Pop My Cherry’ outfit tonight when she takes a job as a promotions girl for a cherry vodka company. She is seen rollerskating around Weatherfield in the outfit, leaving father Kevin furious.
The episode is also being shown before the 9pm watershed. Last night, Vivienne Pattison, from Mediawatch, said: ‘This is a pre-watershed programme – but I don’t think this is suitable viewing before the watershed.’ Even more raunchy photographs of Rosie’s burgeoning glamour career will then be featured on the Coronation Street website.
Miss Flanagan said of her character: 'The whole cherry vodka promotions job leads on to Rosie becoming a glamour model which I'm very excited about! It's perfect for her.'
It is not the first time in recent months the soap opera has been accused of being too risqué, with regards to Rosie's character. In September, raunchy footage of her stripped on the cobbles were again deemed too risqué for the TV show – but not for the Weatherfield watchers on the internet. The scene showed the young Webster throwing off her coat to reveal a sexy basque, stockings and suspenders in attempt to seduce a rival's boyfriend. TV viewers saw an edited version that merely showed Rosie strolling down the street. The programme finished as she began to undress.
And earlier this year, the programme featured Rosie dressed in knickers and a white basque that could barely contain her cleavage. The plot-line focussed on Rosie as a Lolita-style seductress having an affair with her tutor. Ms Flanagan said of the character recently: 'Rosie is outrageous and such a madam and I love playing her. I get to do things that I would never dare do.'

Helen Flanagan's hotel room terror at 'man under her bed' after National Television Awards
30th January 2011
Film and television stars have long been victims of obsessed fans that take their infatuation too far. And Corrie star Helen Flanagan feared she had become the latest soap star stalked by a crazed admirer last week when she fled her hotel room in tears, screaming 'There's a man under my bed!'
The 20-year-old appeared in the lobby of the Radisson Edwardian hotel in Canary Wharf, London barefoot in her bed clothes and in a terrified state, witnesses report. Helen was staying at the hotel with her Coronation street co-stars after the National Television Awards when the incident happened at about 12.30pm on Thursday afternoon.
The actress who plays Rosie Webster on the soap, came out of the lift at the ground-floor lobby and stunned onlookers by screaming that there was a man under her bed in her fifth-floor hotel room.
'Helen was absolutely hysterical,' an onlooker told The People. 'All of a sudden the lift doors opened and out stepped Helen. She was on her own but all of us looked up when she mentioned twice that there was this man under her bed. She was holding her hands to her face clutching a tissue. It was like Helen had just seen a ghost. Her hair was a mess and she was wearing her bed scruffs a striped rugby top, loose-fitting trousers and nothing on her feet.'
Reception staff rushed to the actress' aid, the witness says, and ushered her into a back office. But when security staff went to search the room, they found no one in there.
A spokeswoman for Coronation Street confirmed the incident: 'Helen was checking under her bed and for a split second she thought she had seen someone. 'She is very upset and doesn't want to discuss it.'
Miss Flanagan's co-star Katherine Kelly, 30, went into the manager's office to comfort her co-star. The cast were staying at the East London hotel after attending the awards ceremony at the nearby O2 Arena. The Corrie stars drowned their sorrows at a post-awards party at the hotel after losing out on the Best Serial Drama to EastEnders.
Helen has spoken in the past about her security fears as a downside to fame. 'It can be quite dangerous sometimes,' she has said. 'Its easier to go out when there's security and you're all together.' |

She sounds a tad unbalanced. It doesn't sound like anyone else saw this "man under the bed", does it? |

Spin-off for Rosie?
20 March 2011
Helen Flanagan is reportedly being lined up to star in her own spin-off show. The series, which will initially be shown on-line will follow her character Rosie Webster's quest for recognition as a glamour model.
The Daily Star reports that Rosie will pack her bags and head to London to pursue her dreams and that the online spin-off could become a permanent fixture on ITV2 if it's successful. A source said "Helen is thrilled they're planning to use her character like this. Everyone has been joking that Rosie's reality TV show could be bigger than Jordan's. We've all been watching her desperate attempts at trying to make it ever since she announced to her TV parents Kevin and Sally that she wanted to be a famous glamour model. The writers have already come up with a few ideas about what she can get up to in the Big Smoke."
A spokeswoman for Coronation Street added: "Following huge successes with recent online-only content we will continue to commission innovative material which complements the main ITV1 show and provides something unique for the viewer." |
