I'm getting prompted to install this by my OS. Does anyone know if it's stable, or what?

If you've had updates on before now you'll probably have all that's in it anyway. I never bother with them though as things work fine as they are.

I've heard of people having problems. But none of the computers I use have had an issue. In fact, they even run a titch quicker.

I think most of the problems resulted from a foul-up with an obscure piece of Microsoft software mainly used for small businesses. The other had to do with AMD processors. If you have an intel CPU, I would disable my anti-virus software, install it and cross your fingers.

(The AV software tip is important so that it doesn't interfere with the installation.)

I'm not sure what I have, Major.

How do I check?

Are you saying I should just install it and see what happens?

If you right-click on the My Computer icon and select properties, it should appear in the bottom section ("Computer:")

I would feel ok about installing it (especially if you have no AV software installed or have already disabled it). Microsoft recently changed the status from "recommended" to "required," so this should be a hint at its stability.
