Soldier taken into custody over rape charges

9 July 2012 (Sri Lanka)

A soldier who allegedly abducted and raped a 15 year old girl while on her way to school in the Welikanda area today morning has been arrested by the police, officials said. The soldier had blocked the way of the school girl and abducted her before taking her to a nearby jungle.

Passengers in a bus who were passing by had heard the cries of the girl and intervened and arrested. However, after they handed over the soldier to the army he had escaped from their custody. Police had re-arrested the soldier in the same area later.

Colne soldier to face trial on rape charge

21st June 2012

AN East Lancashire soldier has denied an allegation of rape at Burnley Crown Court. Shaun Aspin, 24, pleaded not guilty to the charge and will face a trial, scheduled to last five days, starting on November 5. The alleged offence is said to have taken place in Colne, on February 17.

Aspin, from Portland Street, Colne, was seriously injured whilst serving in Afghanistan. He is still a serving soldier and is in the Duke of Lancaster regiment. The defendant, a Kingsman in the 1st Battalion, was bailed until the trial hearing, by Judge Jonathan Gibson. He must not enter Burnley or Pendle, except to attend court or for pre-arranged appointments with his solicitors.  He is also not allowed to approach witnesses. Aspin must live and sleep each night at his regiments’s HQ at the Somme Barracks, in Catterick.

The judge relaxed bail conditions for 10 hours on August 3, so that Aspin can attend his father’s wedding in Burnley and reception in Colne. He will be allowed to enter the area between 1pm and 11pm.
