SLA soldier on rape attempt attacked by Neerveali villagers

A Sri Lankan Army soldier who attempted to rape a young Tamil woman in Neerveali in Jaffna district in the early hours of Friday was caught and severely beaten by the villagers, who heard the woman shout. The soldier, from a camp belonging to Achchuvea’li section of the SLA, was handed over to Koappaay Police by the villagers. The police has not produced the soldier in the courts, but admitted that a soldier was heavily beaten by the villagers was taken for medical treatment.
The incident took place around 2:00 a.m. Friday. The villagers have been confronting the SLA soldiers who attempt to rape and sexually harass Tamil women. An elderly Tamil woman was recently sexually harassed by a Sri Lanka Army soldier from the same camp, the residents said.
A nearby village, Puththoor East, experienced similar crimes by the SLA soldiers five years ago, fuelling confrontations by the civilians, who were able to protest at that time. Several civilians sustained injuries when SLA soldiers opened fire at them.
But, now, in a situation of complete subjugation and amidst a renewed terror campaign by the Colombo’s military establishment, residents fear to voice against the crimes by the SLA.
