PM: £700m For New Army Vehicles
October 29, 2008
The Prime Minister has announced £700m to deliver new and improved vehicles to British troops. He said the Government would buy 700 new vehicles and upgrade another 200. "In the face of these new developing threats this will mean that the armed forces have the best practical protection for the work that they do," Mr Brown told MPs during Prime Minister's Questions. He also told MPs that banks lending to small businesses was "central" to Britain's economic recovery.
The key exchanges between David Cameron and the Prime Minister centred around Mr Brown's claim to have abolished boom and bust. He insists he has, the Tory leader says he has not. "How can the Prime Minister not admit that there is an economic burst when 120 homes are being repossessed every day and when the Bank of England says 1.2m people are going into negative equity?" Mr Cameron asked.
The Opposition leader also challenged the Prime Minister over the Government's apparent decision to abandon its strict adherence to the fiscal rules. "He has stood there and lectured us about the brilliance of his fiscal rules. Why won't he admit they are dead?" Mr Cameron asked? Mr Brown's response was that the Tories did not understand the financial crisis.
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said low and middle income families needed tax cuts to give them more "money in their pockets" now. Mr Brown said the Government was already putting additional money into the economy with tax cuts.
