IBM Reaches Milestone

IT giant IBM has celebrated 50 years of operation at Hursley in Hampshire - and celebrated by showing off its innovative past and future. One area of development is the running of business through virtual worlds such as Second Life. And the company has created the job of Metaverse Evangelist, which is held by Ian Hughes. Mr Hughes works on emerging technology and focuses largely on online 3D virtual worlds such as Second Life, within which he goes by the name epredator.

Explaining the meaning of his title Mr Hughes said:"A metaverse refers to any virtual world, things like second life, there're all flavours of a metaverse. "An evangelist is a very newish role that you tend to see in a lot of tech companies with people that are very passionate about an area of the business, but it's not just about selling products. In the avatar-based world, in the metaverses it's a puppet that you explicitly ask to do something. It's like a little proxy for communication."

Mr Hughes went on to say that many business meetings are now being conducted through virtual worlds and even occur in the gaming environment. "It becomes a vehicle just like golf, golf is a bit of metal and a little ball and you hit it around a field, yet powerful business deals are made on the golf course. The digital natives are changing that and tend to do their meetings elsewhere, so these things are vehicles for those quite naturally."

As the Hursley team celebrate their 50th anniversary at the mansion house location, Technofile found out that other developments include the shifting of their business focus from 70 per cent hardware and 30 per cent software to almost entirely software. This is a big move for the company which gave the world the PC. A lot of the developments at this centre are now made in back-end technology reaching the realms of retail, mobile devices, transportation and online transactions.

Metaverse evangelist?! He's a 40 yr old geek in an 80s leather!

IBM have also got the dubious record of being one of the world's worst CFC polluters...
