A fireman has been docked one week's pay for taking time off to donate life-saving bone marrow to a teenage girl.
Mark McCracken, 43, applied for special leave after being told he was a match for the leukaemia victim but fire chiefs told him he would not be paid.
The move has been condemned by Mr McCracken's colleagues and the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is calling for the "outlandish" decision to be reversed.

The Anthony Nolan Trust, which runs a national bone marrow register to treat leukaemia, said most companies gave their employees paid leave and has reimbursed Mr McCracken's lost wage.
Steve Harman, the Lancashire secretary of the FBU, said: "It is ironic that a large part of our job is about saving lives and the lad has saved someone's life and he is being punished. It is a very harsh decision. I was disgusted with them. I hope they will change the policy.''
Mr McCracken, of Colne Lancs, who works at Blackburn fire station, refused to be drawn into the debate about whether he should have been given paid leave.
He said: "I had a letter last Friday from the transplant centre saying that the girl has been able to go home and at the moment my cells have grafted to her's successfully.''
Jean Rigby, a member of the fire authority, said she was appalled by the decision to dock the fireman's wages.
She said: "I feel they should have made an exception, this was a one-off.
''It has been dealt with very badly.''
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said all requests for leave were looked at with a set of consistent criteria and Mr McCracken had been given the time off.

I feel appalled that my home county has been so short-sighted. Maybe they need laser-treatment too!! |
