Australian charged after baby placed in dryer
A 21-year-old Australian man has been arrested after police say he put his girlfriend's baby into a clothes dryer.
Det. Sr. Const. Deb Newman said the 14-month-old girl was left inside the machine for about two minutes.
She suffered serious burns to both feet and her left hand, as well as bruises to her forehead and back.
"The injuries are horrific,"Newman said. "In my years of being a police officer, I've not seen or heard of this type of injury before."
The incident occurred last Thursday while Samuel Barnes-Siddall was babysitting the child at her home in Warwick while her mother was at the gym.
Police allege that when the girl's clothing got wet, Barnes-Siddall placed her in the dryer, closed the door and turned it on.
The child is now in hospital, Newman said.
Barnes-Siddall was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm. He was granted bail of $4,200 and ordered to reappear in court at the end of next month.
He has been ordered not to contact the child or her mother. |

I hope to god the mother doesn't ever want to resume contact with him. That is terrible. You have to wonder what brillance he must have had to think to do that. What's even worse is how did he decide to take her out? |

This happened only about 20 minutes from where I live...its shocking
The suburb is what you'd call 'lower class' for want of a better description...lots of single mums on welfare and unemployed people with little or no schooling.
He actually told police at the time he thought it wouldn't hurt!

Yeah it was shocking. There are some sick people out there.
I just find it very difficult to imagine that anyone, regardless of their social or educational background, wouldn't have the common sense to know that putting a baby in a dryer was wrong. |

You'd be surprised at how expensive common sense can be.
While it's not as drastic, I had a parent who this year thought the best way to cure her child from bedwetting was to not change the sheets for a week and spanked them each morning when they woke up. Going to the doctor to check and see if he had a medical problem never crossed her mind. Nor did taking him for counseling. She figured he was doing it "on purpose". And punished him for it. |

You are right, there probably are a lot of people out there with no common sense. Maybe this guy was a complete idiot brainless bastard! If that's the case, what was the baby's mother doing leaving her baby with him to go to a gym class?
If she's anything like him that baby doesn't stand a chance.

That's always a good question. Is he not that bright? Or is he just sick? And like you said, why would the mother leave the baby with him? Hopefully as the days go on we'll get more answers. |

Well it turns out she wasn't going to the 'gym'. Police found she'd left him in charge so she could go get a fix
The bub is in te,porary foster care at the moment...best thing all round considering the situation.

Sound like a couple of crack heads. I hope that baby is kept in care until they can sort themselves out and prove themselves. The poor child might of died. |

This is where I hope the social services involved have the law behind them and the balls to do what needs to be done. I can understand wanting to help "preserve" a family, but sometimes blood just isn't thicker than water.
This child should be given a chance to be raised in a healthy environment if it's not being afforded a healthy one from it's own blood. |

Thing is, there are millions of mothers in the same position who are addicted to legal drugs, so would it have been understandable if she'd gone to her doctor for a fix of valium, prozac or whatever rather than a dealer?
(I'm claming 12 trouble-maker points for this!) |

If they're addicted to any type of drugs or alcohol they are unfit parents. Period. I don't think children should have to be subjected to be raised in that type of home. And it's not just drug addictions that are problems. What if a parent has an addiction to gambling or porn that is affecting the upbringing? Then the child should be taken out of the home until the parent can recover and if they parent cannot they should be placed in a proper home. |

I don't think it matters what the substance is - if it turns a person into someone that would abuse an infant this way or think it was alright to leave their baby with someone that could! :grr: |

Earlier Cat said that this happened to be a lower income neighbourhood..... and although a lot of these types of incidents happen, I hate it when these less fortunate people are always protrayed this way. I've seen some pretty stupid things in my career and one of the worst was from some guy with tons of money.
His son was in hospital with croup and a respiratory illness. Anyway, that was back in the day of what we call here, Croup Tents (oxygen tents). Anyway, everyone knows that oxygen is flammable, right? And even if you didn't the posted signs and health teaching that were done more than makes this point. So I walk in one day to take the kids temperature or something and find him playing with a lighter. Dad was really pissed when I calmly took the lighter and explained that this wasn't that should be around the oxygen. Not to mention the fact that I don't consider a lighter to be an appropriate "toy" for a two year old.
Of course, this was also the man that asked me to "suck the snot" out of his childs nose with a syringe.
It takes all kinds. |
