This would be fantastic if it works out. I didn't know that the conflict was caused by something so basic, so the whole thing makes more sense now.

This is great news.

I believe that whilst the conflict is essentially over "survival" in a harsh area, I believe the West's interests is to stoke up the conflict due to the Oil in the area (by financing the side fighting against the Sudanese Government)

If anyone asks why people spend so much on space related research - you can point them to this as an example of something good that has come from all the technology.

I suppose we can also thank the developers of the inter-continental ballistic missile developers for space tourism.

A fraction of the cost of the "space related research" could have relieved poverty round the world.

p.s. It was ground-based radar which found the water, and NOT space related research.

Agree with all the above, except to say that if you click the link on the BBC page that says "Radar finds water for refugees", you'll see that it says:

"A new technique using satellite radar images may hold the key to providing the water needs of 200,000 Sudanese living in sweltering heat in camps along the Chadian border.......This is a promising example of how space technologies can have a practical and critical role in humanitarian assistance and international development"

Sounds like "spin" from the Military Industrial Complex which is arming the militias on the ground.

It is said that the next military wars will be over water .. and thus, if the satellite technology does eventually work, it is likely to be used by the military to "target" areas of the world where water is suspected of being found.

It's pretty impressive they can do all this... and still get the spelling of their own ships wrong!

Science types aren't known for their spelling. I'm not even certain if that *isn't* the "correct" American spelling. If they can spell colour without a u, all bets are off.

ah, but as the link Mandy posted shows, the name of the ship is Endeavour. They can put a man on the moon, but they can't decide on a simple literal direction! etc etc.. haha

I can't find the article right now but I read that they realised their mistake and have corrected it.

"Endeavor" is the correct american spelling, but the shuttle is named after THE "Endeavour" and therefore it needs the good old british U included.
