CORONATION FEAT
By Lara Gould And Karen Rockett 27/05/2007

CORONATION STREET swept the board at last night's British Soap Awards scooping seven awards including best soap, actor and actress. The ITV soap trounced EastEnders which only won one award this year, in the same month it also suffered its lowest-ever audience share. Hollyoaks beat the ailing BBC soap, scoring three awards, after being nominated in every category for the first time ever.

Corrie's winners included best actor Antony Cotton, 31, who plays gay barman Sean Tully, and best actress to Kate Ford, aka Tracy Barlow. The soap also scooped best storyline for Tracy's revenge on Charlie's cheating, and Bill Ward, 40, who played Charlie Stubbs got best exit. Best newcomer was ex-Hear'Say singer Kym Ryder, 30, as barmaid Michelle. While fellow newcomer Rob James-Collier, 29, who plays Corrie factory boss Liam Connor was voted sexiest male.

WHO WON

SEXIEST MALE: Rob James-Collier (Corrie's Liam Connor)

SEXIEST FEMALE: Roxanne McKee (Hollyoaks' Louise Summers)

VILLAIN OF YEAR: Gemma Bissix (Hollyoaks' Clare Cunningham)

BEST ACTOR: Antony Cotton (Corrie's Sean Tully)

BEST ACTRESS: Kate Ford (Corrie's Tracy Barlow)

BEST COMEDY PERFORMANCE: Gemma Merna (Hollyoaks' Carmel McQueen)

Best Newcomer: Kym Ryder (Corrie's Michelle Connor)

SPECTACULAR SCENE: Emmerdale's house collapse

ON-SCREEN PARTNERSHIP: Stirling Gallacher/Sean Gleeson of Doctors

BEST SINGLE EPISODE: Doctors: "Shreds and Aftermath"

BEST EXIT: Bill Ward (Corrie's Charlie Stubbs)

BEST DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE Lacey Turner (EastEnders' Stacey Slater)

Best Young Dramatic Performance: Eden Taylor-Draper (Emmerdale's Belle Dingle)

BEST STORYLINE: Charlie's cheating/Tracy's revenge (Kate Ford, Bill Ward and Samia Smith)

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT: EastEnders creator Tony Jordan

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT: Wendy Richard of EastEnders

BEST SOAP: Coronation Street

--------------

I'm not surprised Corrie won the best Soap, and also that the Tracy/Charlie story won the best storyline, but I'm not convinced at all that Antony Cotton is the best actor out of all the soaps that are on...

It must be a real stretch for him to play 'Sean' in that fake, camp way don't you think?

I am reminded of a joke by Jasper Carrot when talking about Paul Henry (Benny in Crossroads....showing my age here)

He said if he isn't really like that he must be a fabulous actor....and what's a fabulous actor doing in Crossroads?

haha yeah - I'd not heard that before but it's spot on. I can't remember seeing 'Benny' in much after that - maybe he peaked too soon?

Here's something I just saw in 'The People' (erk)

SILLY SUDS
27/05/07
PREPARATIONS for last night’s British Soap Awards were marred by a blazing row over allegations of a fix. The glitzy ceremony – widely regarded as the soap world’s answer to the Oscars – had six categories voted for by the public. The other 11 accolades were decided by a special panel – made up of executives from ITV.

But last night a BBC source told the Daily Star Sunday there was little impartiality when it came to the panel, who they claimed use tactical voting to squeeze out the Beeb’s EastEnders. But stars from Hollyoaks and Coronation Street hit back with their own conspiracy theories claiming voting for the viewer-chosen gongs were also up for abuse.

The row erupted after a Beeb source complained about the panel-chosen awards. The source said: “The panel isn’t fair. It’s made up of executives from ITV as well as critics and representatives from each soap. But there isn’t much impartiality and a lot of the voting is tactical. It’s a bit of a fix. The whole thing is organised by ITV, so of course they’re going to do everything they can to give their own shows the best chance of walking away with the awards.”

EastEnders, which has a history of doing well in the viewer-voted awards, was snubbed from five categories decided by the panel. And although ITV soaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale both did well, it was Hollyoaks that benefited most from the panel – receiving a nomination in every category. Our source added: “All you have to do is look at the panel’s decisions. All three [Corrie, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks] were nominated more than once in some categories.”

Fans were able to vote online and by phone in the six categories. But some of the stars were worried some viewers would take advantage of free voting online – by voting as many times as they wanted. Speaking before the winners were announced Corrie babe Samia Smith, 24, who plays Maria Sutherland, said: “It’s going to be interesting to see how internet voting affects things. I’m sure it’ll mean people will vote lots for the same thing over and over.” And Hollyoaks honey Roxanne McKee, 26, who plays Louise Summers, said: “It may not be fair the way the voting is done.”

But an awards spokesman hit back: “It’s a fairly weighted panel. The other categories are all viewer voted. It’s the fairest way we can do it.”

The British Soap Awards will be shown on ITV1 at 8pm this Wednesday.

It's been in a down point because of two stupid plotlines but I think it will get better and it is loads better then any other soaps going.

Did you miss the part where eefan and I were talking about American soaps? The judges aren't comparing those. We're saying it's better then the soaps in America.

So glad to know Corrie got Best Soap, but aside from EE don't know about the others. It's 10 stars above EastEnders I think. Hope to get to see the awards show. Thanks for the Winners List. Smile

When I lived in the states I used to flick through 3 or 4 day time soaps and watch for a few seconds then flick to the next one, then the next and it didnt matter the story still flowed as the only have 3 or 4 plots that they rotate and swop between charictors for so it make no differnce which one your watching, entertainment for the totaly mindless.
