A ploughman's lunch is a cold snack or meal, featuring at a minimum, a thick piece of cheese (usually Cheddar, Stilton, or other local cheese), pickle (often Branston Pickle, sometimes piccalilli and/or pickled onions), crusty bap or chunk of bread, and butter.
It is often accompanied by a green salad; other common additions are half an apple, rocket, celery, p?t?, sliced hard-boiled egg or beetroot.
It is a common menu item in English pubs, often shortened when ordering to "a ploughman's".
Familiarity with the ploughman's lunch has lead catering companies to describe a sandwich containing Cheddar, pickle and salad as a "ploughman's sandwich." |

I'd never heard of picalilli until Bert on EE kept asking for it. |

I love picalilli. My father-in-law introduced me to it one day at a family luncheon. I order it quite often. Having it with a bit of ham and cheese, YUM! |

It does. When I first saw it I was very put off but I'm the type of person who will give it a try. I loved it, but it's not for everyone. My husband thinks I am insane for loving it. Of course, I think the same of him and marmite! |
