A Chicago police officer is on the other side of the law over accusations that he beat and kicked a female bartender on the city's Northwest Side.
Officer Anthony Abbate, 38, is charged with aggravated battery in connection with a Feb. 19 attack at Jesse's Shortstop Inn, reports CBS station WBBM-TV in Chicago.
Abbate is a 12-year-veteran of the North Side's Lincoln Police District, officials said.
He was free on bond late Wednesday afternoon. A judge set his bond at $70,000.
Surveillance video taken inside the bar appears to show Abbate punching and kicking the bartender while off duty. Reports said the bartender had refused to serve him more alcohol.
A police report was initially filed against the officer, who was off duty at the time of the incident, and an investigation was launched by the Office of Professional Standards on Feb. 21, according to a statement from Chicago police.
The bartender filed a police report, but Abbate checked himself into a medical facility, so he was not arrested until last week, authorities said.
As the investigation proceeded, the Cook County State's Attorney's office became involved and charges of felony aggravated battery were approved on Tuesday, the statement said.
The officer was originally arrested on charges of misdemeanor battery on March 14, but was arrested again on the upgraded charges Tuesday, according to police.
Abbate has been put on leave pending an internal investigation, authorities said Wednesday. He is expected to be fired after the investigation, Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Monique Bond said.
Abbate's attorney would not comment in court Wednesday.
What a sick piece of shit! I'm shocked there were others standing about letting him beat on her like that, and they should have been charged for being accomplices since they didn't left a bloody finger the useless bastards.
