Judge orders ban on silly names
Wednesday, April 22, 2009
In moments of frustration, parents call their little angels all sorts of names. But spare a thought for Dear Pineapple, Breast and Dummy, who have to live with their ill-advised monikers round-the-clock – unless one crusading judge has his way.
He is trying to stop parents in the Dominican Republic calling their children Mazda, Toshiba and other strange or confusing names. Jose Angel Aquinas wants to ban any names more than three words long, any that could be considered vulgar or those which give no indication of gender.
But he faces opposition from Judge Aura Celeste Fernando, who said officials in the Caribbean country should instead explain to parents hell-bent on a name such as Rambo Pot the consequences of their decision. Judge Fernando said it was not prudent for government to have the final say on names parents give their children.
Other names listed in the civil register give a nod to political figures – Winston Churchill de la Cruz or Ernesto Che Perez, for instance. It is unclear whether Judge Aquinas wants to prohibit these names, too, but his proposal will be debated by politicians later this year. Venezuela sought a similar crackdown on odd names two years ago but officials rejected the proposal because they said it could violate 'the right to liberty'.

That is a common Hispanic name...you know like Juan Pablo Angel. It is pronounced "Ahn-hell" I can see that naming your kid Breast is an issue, but I don't know that it is the government's job to step in to keep your kid from being beat up on the play ground because you are a plank. I think they would be better served keeping a list of the names that they think are stupid and giving those kids one free name change when they get to be 18! Anyone else wanting to change their name has to pay, but the Breasts of the Dominican Republic can change for free! For those parents who want to use brand names (Mazda and Toshiba) should have to pay royalties to the companies that their kids are named after and it should be a HUGE amount because think of how many times you use your name and what kinds of things you put it on. That is alot of advertising!! Just my 2p... |

German triple-barrelled ban holds
Germany's highest court has upheld a law which makes it illegal for anyone to use more than two last names. A married couple challenged the 1993 law after they were forbidden from joining their surnames - one of which is already a double-barrelled name.
Frieda Rosemarie Thalheim married Hans-Peter Kunz-Hallstein in 1997 but both had wanted to retain their surnames. The court ruled surnames made of three or more different names made it more difficult to trace back a family line.
After the ruling, Hans-Peter Kunz-Hallstein told the BBC he and his wife were disappointed. "We're married," he said, "and we want to show it."

Mother who named son ‘Jihad’ to face trial in France
20 Dec 2012
A mother who sent her three-year-old son to school dressed in a T-shirt with the words ‘I am a bomb’ on it will face trial. The boy’s shirt also had ‘Jihad, born on September 11' on the back.
His unnamed mother and an uncle, who bought the long-sleeved shirt, are charged with condoning a crime over the alleged reference to the 9/11 attacks. A teacher at the nursery school in the southern town of Sorgues near Avignon, France, reported the incident when the youngster was dropped off on September 25.
Town mayor Thierry Lagneau, of the conservative UMP party, subsequently asked prosecutors to investigate. ‘I condemn the attitude of the parents who shamefully took advantage of the person and the age of this child to convey a political message,’ he said.
The trial has been set for March 6 next year. The pair made no comment as they left the courthouse. Records show the boy was born on September 11, 2009 and was named Jihad.

just read the German one a couple of posts above.
the guy would be called ..
"Hans-Peter Kunz-Hallstein-Thalheim", not quite as bad as,
"Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern- schplenden- schlitter- crasscrenbon- fried- digger- dingle- dangle- dongle- dungle- burstein- von- knacker- thrasher- apple- banger- horowitz- ticolensic- grander- knotty- spelltinkle- grandlich- grumblemeyer- spelterwasser- kurstlich- himbleeisen- bahnwagen- gutenabend- bitte- ein- nürnburger- bratwustle- gerspurten- mitz- weimache- luber- hundsfut- gumberaber- shönedanker- kalbsfleisch- mittler- aucher von Hautkopft of Ulm".
but they do have a point. As does the mayor of Sorgues. |
